Owners on Turo make renting from it suck sometimes

Its been described as the AirBnb of cars. I think that’s a stretch. I’ve used it a few times before. And when it works, it works good. Wanna look rich? Find a Maserati to rent and go from there. And its way easier to rent from than a national airport chain, who often want hundreds of dollars in deposits if you are a local renter. What makes it suck though? The owners of the vehicles themselves and for a few reasons:

Unrealistic mileage limitations on most cars: Even the most basic vehicles, something like a Corolla, will be pegged at 400 miles or less. That’s nothing if you want a car for the weekend or something else. Go over that and you can get charged anywhere from 44 to 80 cents per mile. And that can add up. Hell mileage adds up. Why rent a car and limit people so much? Now there are some owners of some impressive cars that don’t limit you. But you have to really search for those. Why even offer up your car for rent if you don’t want miles on it?

Turo makes owners think they can charge what they believe their cars are worth: And its often just off a badge or because some guy wants to make a quick buck. Take this example:

Kinja'd!!!

Some couple is renting their 3 year old E Class convertible for $198 a day. You can only go 200 miles and any miles after that are 77 cents a mile. Why would I pay 200 a day for a 3 year old car? Its 198 for no other reason than its a Benz. And you see this over and over again, people charging what they think their cars are worth. Even on the low end its the same. I saw someone wanting 90 bucks a day for an 08 PT Cruiser.

Owners with bogus ass conditions when using the car: Now I get that these people are the owners of said cars. And in any situation like this you want your car returned in the condition that it left in. I get that. But when you start to request that a car be waxed upon return or there is a $30 dollar charge added, or tire tread measured for wear etc, it starts to get extreme.

These are just a few of the problems I’ve ran into using Turo. Like I said, its brilliant if you happen to find a car you’ve been wanting to drive and you don’t mind paying. You can find some great cars (depending where you live) on the cheap. But its people like the ones I listed here that turn me off from even using the service sometimes.

I rented a Volvo S60 last weekend in philly for a trip to Tennessee. Allowed 2000 miles over 4 days and the guy was real chill. When you find the good ones, it works well. Total Turo cost was $423 including all fees.

I’d imagine that Turo’s position is that those issues will sort themselves out. They probably believe that if someone charges too high a rate for their car, or has unrealistic mileage expectations, then the market will correct for it. The people you should really be disappointed with are those who pay their high rates or accept their mileage limitations. If they aren’t getting any renters, the bulb should light up above their head that they need to relax their price/mileage.

Yea when it works its great. Ive encountered some really great owners. Just certain ones make the experience suck.

I suspect I can get an E cabrio from Hertz for closer to $100-150 per day, with unlimited miles, and new. It may be basic spec, but so is that Turo.

In my area, there’s a nutter wanting $500/day for a 3 year old Range Rover. another with a $300/day 5 year old 7er, $300/day for a 2005 FX35 (I kid you not), $255/day 2016 Outback, $250/day for a seven year old Suburban, etc.

Some of those people though seem stubborn and don’t give up. I’ve seen the same cars listed that are high. its like the owners are like “no I’m going to eventually get what I’m asking for and I’m not giving up till I get it!”.

All those people can kiss my ass. Those are the ones I was talking about. Wanting to make a quick buck more than anything. You’d have to be an idiot to pay for any of those. $300 a day for a 12 year old Infiniti?

A quick buck from a dope. Some of the semi-exotics don’t seem insanely overpriced, but the ordinary mainstream lux stuff can be hilarious. I think they are fishing for rubes who don’t know that mainstream rental fleets often have options for fancier cars, too. I’ve rented E-class and X5 from Sixt in the US for around $50/day (pre tax), and about the same in Europe, too (German rental fleets are astonishing).

I couldn’t make up the FX, here it is:

Yea I just checked out Sixt (since I never heard of them) and they have great prices on cars Im going to have to rent from them on day.

That FX guy is insane. Its no wonder he has never had any reviews or rentals. He just needs to give it up. But you’re right Ive seen some exotics on Turo that are pretty good. Once saw an R8 for $500 bucks a day. i would bite. But mileage was limited to 150. Not nearly enough.

Not only that, you have to be at least 30 to rent.

I’m actually about to give it a try for the first time since I’m going to be in Wisconsin for a few days with nothing to do between a business trip and a wedding. I found a ‘10 GT-R for $105 per day w/ 200 miles per day ($0.75/mi extra) and no oddball stipulations on the ad, so I figured that might be a good way to spend some of that time.

Remarkably, most of the other options in the area weren’t too outrageous. A Corvette and M3 sit around $125/day, a brand-new A7 S-Line is $185/day, a Fusion and a Town & Country for $45/day, etc.

Yea you can find some gems on there for pretty good rates. Just they’ll have low mileage. If its your first time I would suggest looking online for a first time rental promo code. Usually they give you like $25 bucks off your first rental.

It irks me because a drive over 30 can be just as bad as some punk ass 19 year old, maybe even more so because with age comes a certain air of thinking you know what you’re doing when you really dont.

Sixt has limited US locations, and some customer service horror stories, but I’ve never had a real issue with them. Their prices are pretty good, and Euro fleet tends to be well equipped (US fleet not so much, but it’s the same at every carrier). Unless I am using miles/rewards, I patronize them when I can.

I’ve seen Ferraris for under $500/day, too. I wonder if a mileage limit can be negotiated with the owner.

Depends on the person. Less to lose (for lack of a better phrase) when you’re younger. Most of my 20's can be defined as “IDGAF, braaaaaaaap” in any area of my life.

Now I’m 32, married, with a house and a good job. So I’m like “braaaap, oh wait chill a little I give fucks now.”

I wish there was a Turo for beaters. I’d pay $20/day for something where I can teach myself to drive stick.

LOL - for comparison a 2015 QX50 is $71 a day in the same area

I thought about renting my 04 G35 but it isn’t proably couldn’t bring enough cash daily to make it worth it.

With me being in California there are like 5 locations near me with a pretty good selection. Ill just have to go and see. I refuse to go to LAX though.

Are you talking about Ferraris on Turo?

Yep. A few months back I was going to rent a Camaro ZL1 from this guy and he wanted exactly that or he was going to charge $20 bucks. I canceled my trip before it began.

It’s worth a try. Just don’t expect loaded cars.

Yes, I saw a 360/430 on local Turo, I forget the price but I am pretty sure it was well under $500. Not my favorite model.

That’s a more reasonable rate.

Yeah, you’d have to price it similar to cars of similar value. Not worth the worry. I don’t like the idea of strange people driving a car I like, I couldn’t do this.

I wouldn’t want someone to wax my car unless they were a detailer and I knew what product they were using, seems silly to me. And what’s with the $20 charge if not done? Doesn’t need make sense.

And it’s a Camaro? I’m shocked, shocked I tell you!

I would bet a lot of money a good car wash would fool that idiot into thinking you actually waxed it.

Or, I would just use a spray wax I never use and is stuck in a corner somewhere. The devil is in the details!

I have no idea what the $20 is for. Just douchey-ness. Ive seen cleaning fees as well.
